LOS PILOTILLOS
Now
Today (2022) “Los Pilotillos” (or concrete columns in the water) are barely seen. It was a place for people to climb and dive into the water. The beautiful Sosúa Beach is one of the best in the Dominican Republic.
Then
The United Fruit Company was dedicated to the cultivation and export of bananas, operating in Sosúa from around 1904 to 1914. They had a 1.185-ton ship called Sosúa, manufactured in 1912, and they built a port on the beach itself. The facilities left by the United Fruit Company served as a starting point for the Jewish immigrants who would arrive some twenty-five years later.
